The innovation initiative design canvas is a trial to structure, quantify and visualize all the elements needed for the success of the initiative in a single place. ...It is a tool which can be customized and tailored according to the nature of the initiative and the objectives behind it. The most important thing is to guarantee that all elements are covered, considered and planned ahead. Also it is used to make sure that all the related stakeholders are on the same understanding and commitment level.


The goal of the canvas is to make sure in a structured manner that all elements needed for a specific initiative are in place, considered, budgeted, and planned in the proper way to achieve the desired objective and goals.

How to Use

The initiative design canvas gives a high level view for the planning needs of each initiative. The canvas covers the following main planning elements:

  • Description: Each initiative needs to have a brief description with a clear mission and objective to achieve.
  • Target Segment: each initiative is targeting a specific segment(s) based on the ENTERPRISE TEAM INVENTIVENESS PERSONA. Identifying the segment is crucial to make sure of the proper targeting.

  • Motive and Positioning: Based on the identified segment, the proper motive and positioning for such segments will be designed. This will directly impact the initiative process, give and gets.
  • Communication Plan: Each initiative must have a clear internal (or external in case of open innovation) communication plan. Including the communication strategy, communication channels and the needed campaign intensity.
  • - Stakeholders Alignment Strategy: Based on the type of the initiative influencing and generally involved stakeholders must be identified. Clear alignment strategy must be in place. As we need to agree that in many cases we have important stakeholders (like first line supervisors or manager or even in some cases department heads or directors) who are not directly involved in the initiative. But those influencers or stakeholders are key for the success. Finding the clear wins, making sure that they believe in the direct and indirect value of the initiative and achieving the needed alignment level is always important. Also stakeholders may include different organization supporting functions as the HR, Finance, Purchase or others, identifying them and what is needed from each of them from the beginning will secure the efficient and effective operations of the initiative.
  • - Experience and Process: Identifying the target segment level of experience is important. Designing a clear transparent detailed process is a key element to achieve target segment involvement.
  • - Platforms, methods, tools and activities: any initiative even the simplest needs to be supported by a set of platforms, methods, tools and activities. Identified the needed and making sure of the availability is important.
  • - Starting Date: choosing the proper starting date is one of the major elements of success. Many factors needs to be considered including seasonality of the enterprise activities, major industry events, major deliveries, annual vacation seasons and many other factors.
  • - Duration: Based on the nature of the initiative the proper duration must be set with a clear balance between the needed effective doze to achieve the initiative activities objectives and at the same time the needed investment from people involvement.
  • - Serving Pillar: as each initiative is designed to serve achieving a specific enterprise innovation maturity level for a specific pillar. Identifying the serving pillar(s) is crucial. Please refer to the enterprise innovation audit pillars and sub pillars.
  • - Dependency: identifying any dependencies is important. Dependencies may include time allocation, specific competency or change is a specific organizational process.
  • - Frequency: Each initiative must have a planned frequency either it is a onetime initiative or a regular initiative which will be repeated within a specific frequency.
  • - Stakeholders: most important internal and external stakeholder must be listed.
  • - Budget $: Total dollar value (in many cases out of pocket investment) needs to be identified.
  • - Talent Allocation: Needed time investment to be allocated for the organization team members from the different departments and teams must be budgeted.
  • - Supporting Teams: Needed activities, budget and resources from the different enterprise supporting teams (HR, Finance, Admin, Facility, Safety or others) must be identified.


For each innovation initiative we need to consider different parameters and elements. Each initiative has a set of target audience (our people & our teams), ...different objectives to meet and server. We need to deal with each initiative as a product which we need to communicate, promote and reach the required adoption and engagement from its target group of people. Each initiative needs its own well designed experience and process. As we are targeting to launch an innovation initiative, we need to be the role model when it comes to user/customer/team member experience all over the life cycle of the initiative. The initiative needs to be a true user centric, considering all types of stakeholders and audience. To be able to achieve this, we need to have in place the proper platforms, tools, methods and activities. The initiative goals, targets, objectives, KPIs and definition of success must be designed, agreed upon and clearly communicated to all stakeholders as early as possible. Finally proper resources, budgets and participants time allocations must be calculated, approved and be in place in a clear and transparent manner.
