The Strategize phase/stage is the first phase in which we identify the enterprise status quo, innovation readiness, capability and desired enterprise objectives/goals from the overall innovation activities and processes.
To be able to strategize, we need to have a starting point. The main objective is to understand the internal and external factors impacting the enterprise. So in this phase we focus on understanding both internal and external factors, and most importantly on the enterprise internal innovation capability readiness. Then we start to identify the gaps, design the desired enterprise capability & maturity over a span ranging from 2 to 5 years, set the goals and objectives, design the KPIs, estimate the needed resources and budgets, and finally design our implementation road map.
Strategize Phase Tools:
- Enterprise Innovation Audit Canvas
Innovation audit is an essential first step for any organization that wants to adapt innovation as part of its strategy.
The Enterprise Innovation Audit Canvas includes the suggested enterprise innovation technical capability audit framework. The canvas is an adapted and modified version based on IEEE Innovation Capability Audit developed by Vittorio Chiesa (Chiesa, 1998) which focuses on whether the individual processes necessary for innovation are in place and the degree to which best practices are used and implemented effectively.
It implies assessment (either self or external) of the practices used through comparison with known best practice. The main purpose is to describe the audit main pillars in a simple approach and link it to the enterprise innovation audit maturity canvas which will be used to conduct the internal audit.
- Business Definition Questions
Pre-Audit business definition questionsis a recommended step before starting the Enterprise Innovation Capability Audit, we need to define our business. A predefined set of questions are listed. Answering those questions helps in defining the business, understanding its nature and directing the audit into the proper directions.
The main objective of these questions is to provide a common agreed upon understanding for the different aspects of the business between all interested stakeholders.
- Enterprise Innovation Maturity Canvas
In the enterprise innovation audit maturity canvas, we visualize the 8 main enterprise innovation capability readiness pillars, with their 27 sub pillars. Each pillar and sub pillar is covered through a set of questions, almost 35 different questions, to cover and result in the enterprise internal innovation capability status quo.
- Enterprise Innovation Maturity Evaluation Grid Canvas
In the enterprise innovation maturity evaluation grid canvas, we provide a tool to visualize the audit result in a single view, based on an evaluation of the 8 main framework pillars and their related 27 sub pillars. In such a single visual view, the enterprise can understand its overall performance related to each pillar and its sub pillars.
- Enterprise Innovation Maturity Road map Canvas
In the enterprise innovation maturity road-map canvas, we are proposing a tool in which we can structure, set the priority and maturity target over a span of time for each of the 8 pillars and their related 27 sub pillars.
